SBL December/January MVP: Rashad Jennings

Pure Youth forward/center Rashad Jennings was named SBL MVP for the months of December and January.

Jennings is averaging 16.8 points and 21.8 rebounds for the season. He established the SBL single-game rebounding record with 33 in the Feb. 13 game against Taiwan Beer.

Jennings received 45 points in the media poll. Taiwan Beer guard Yang Ching-min was second at 21 points.

SBL Week 8 MVP: Chen Shun-hsiang

BOT guard Chen Shun-hsiang won the SBL Week 8 MVP with an average of 21.7 points and 7 rebounds after helping the team to its first three-game winning streak in five years.

Chen is having a breakout year this season, averaging 18.4 points and 5.2 rebounds. Chen gave credit to teammate John Vaudereuil, who joined the team in mid-season, for his solid inside play.

BOT players dominated the media poll with Chen going first with 24 points. Vaudereuil was second with 16 points while Hsu Chih-chang was third with 10 points.

SBL Week 7 MVP: Shawn Hawkins

KKL import Shawn Hawkins was named SBL Week 7 MVP after a brilliant week during which he averaged an astonishing 45.7 points and 14.3 rebounds in three games.

Hawkins scored 137 points in three nights, including 43 points in the game vs. Taiwan Beer, 31 points against Taiwan Mobile and a SBL single game record 63 points against Yulon.

The American forward, who join KKL in mid season, said he would trade the scoring record for more wins. KKL head coach Lo Tien-ching said he gave Hawkins the green lights to showcase his offensive skills on the court since the team has been plagued by injuries this season.

Despite Hawkins’ awesome performance, KKL ranked last in the seven-team league as of Saturday.

SBL Week 6 MVP: Hong Chih-shan

Pure Youth point guard Hong Chih-shan was named SBL Week 6 MVP Tuesday, winning the weekly award for the first time this season.

Hong, a point guard known for his consistency and clutch shooting, won the media poll mainly because of his 31-point, 7-assists outburst in the 89-69 win over KKL Sunday. He averaged 15.6 points and 3.6 assists in the week. However, his season averages of 8.6 points and 2.5 assists were not particularly outstanding.

Hong had 17 points in the media poll, edging out teammate Rashad Jennings, who had 12 points and Emmanuel Jones, who received 11.

SBL Week 5 MVP: Yang Ching-min

Taiwan Beer forward/guard Yang Ching-min won his second weekly MVP of the season when he was named SBL Week 5 MVP Tuesday.

Yang averaged 20.7 points, 6 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the week and was one of the main reasons why TB is leading the seven-team league with 12 wins and one loss.

He received 39 points in the weekly media poll. TB import Emmanuel Jones ranked second in the poll with 14 points.

Yang is averaging 16.1 points, 4.4 boards, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals for the season.

SBL Week 4 MVP: Rashad Jones-Jennings

Pure Youth import Rashad Jones-Jennings became the first repeat winner of the SBL weekly MVP when he was named Week 4 MVP Tuesday. The American forward averaged 22.7 points, 25.3 rebounds and led PY to a perfect 3-0 week.

Jennings missed by a bucket to become the first SBL player to have five straight 20-20s during a season, but he did not seem to mind, saying that individual statistics came second.

He is averaging 18.7 points and 21.6 rebounds for the season.

Jennings had 36 points in the media poll. TB’s Yang Ching-min came second with 16 points.

SBL Week 3 MVP: Rashad Jones-Jennings

Pure Youth Construction import Rashad Jones-Jennings, who averaged 23.6 points and 22.3 rebounds last week, was named SBL Week 3 MVP and became the first foreign player to win the weekly honor this season.

The American player received 38 points in the media poll to beat out Taiwan Beer import Emmanuel Jones, who had 15 points, for the award.

“Jennings has helped the team a lot on the defensive end and in the rebounding department, ” PY head coach Hsu Chin-tse said, adding that Jenning has been in better physical condition and had no problem to keep up with his quicker teammates.

The former NCAA Division I rebounding champion was quoted as saying that he believed that he would be playing a lot better after his injury is fully recovered.
